This watch has a movement (number 4413) made in about 1710 in the workshop of Thomas Tompion (1639-1713), one of the great London watchmakers. During his career, London became the leading centre of watchmaking in Europe.
It is probably a tribute to the excellence of the movement that, in about 1740, it was thought worthwhile to make a new gold case for it. The case was made by Thomas Potts, whose mark is struck three times inside the case. It is likely that the white enamel dial was added to the watch at the same time.

| Object history | According to a letter from Miss I. de B. Lockyer, when she proposed the loan of the watch to the V&A on 2 March 1958, the watch formerly belonged to 'the Harrolds of Utterby House, Utterby, nr. Louth, Lincolnshire. It was bequeathed to my father by his god-mother Mrs Benson, the last survivor of the Harrold family'. |
