Place of origin |
This decorative detail is found on a tailored ladies jacket worn on formal occasions by a Jinghpaw woman. The elaborate silver engraved bosses and silver tassels embellish the front and back of the garment. The jacket would have been worn with an intricately patterned, hand woven, calf length pukhang (wrap skirt), black leggings and black turban.
The Jinghpaw are the most numerous of the Kachin, a Tibeto-Burman people who originally migrated from Yunnan province in South West China. Farming people, they now occupy the vast tract of hill country stretching down through north-east Burma from the headwaters of the great Chindwin and Irrawady Rivers.
