  • This watch paper shows a church identified in the engraving as St. Peter's Church, Frome, although the building is clearly St. John the Baptist Church in Bath Street. This was considered a contemporary mistake on the part of the engraver and/or artist. However, the current vicar (2021), the Reverend Colin Alsbury, provided further information in that before the 1850’s, the parish church of Frome, though originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was known as St. Peter’s because of a portrait of St. Peter that hung within the Chancel. The Census districts for 1841 and 1851 list St. John the Baptist Church as ‘St Peter’s’. Upon Vicar Bennett's arrival in 1852 the use of St. John the Baptist was restored as the official dedication.
