Design for an ornamental chimney pot

Design
ca. 1837 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This chimney pot was made in a picturesque style, partly classical and partly Elizabethan Revival. It was also a scientific attempt to solve the common problem of smoke being blown back into a room. This was caused by a down-draught of wind in the chimney. The cut-away section is a kind of vent at the base of the structure. This was to aid and direct gusts of wind so that they would pull up the smoke as it was forced past the lip of the chimney head. Charles James Richardson (1806-1871) was a pupil of the architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837). In 1837 he published a book entitled A Popular Treatise on the Warming and Ventilation of Buildings.
