Hanging

1600-1630 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Hanging or cover of embroidered linen with silk in stem, long and short, buttonhole, roumanian, plaited and hollie stitches with detached buttonhole, buttonhole filling and Roumanian couching. Of repeating all-over design, the pattern shows red holly berries in groups on curving green branches interspersed with stylised holly leaves in various techniques, colours and designs of outline and fill-in stitches in various shades of green, red, silver and gold silk. Embroidered with a holly pattern with leaves and stems in green, yellow, gold and brown. A border down the centre may point to this hanging originally intended to cover both sides of a long cushion cover, although the considerable length shows evidence of shortening, which would suggest an abnormally long cushion cover.

Lining of green striped silk. Variations in the red buttonhole-stitched edge point to later alterations. Later conservation work done in 1982.
