Favourite elephants were often painted by Indian court artists, but they are usually richly adorned and often named. This one, although magnificent, seems to be more of a working beast than a royal one.
The painting is in the court style of Murshidabad, a city that broke away from Mughal rule and became a flourishing artistic centre from about 1740. The pale tones were popular during the reign of Aliverdi Khan (1740-56).(27/9/2013) |
