Painting

ca. 1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This Mughal painting that once belonged to a manuscript and was later mounted for inclusion in an album has no descriptive text. This means that neither the subject nor the book to which it once belonged can be precisely identified. It is in the style of Mughal court painting of the late 16th or early 17th century and was almost certainly done for a patron within the court. It characteristically combines stylisation with observations from the contemporary world, including a female construction worker in the construction of the city. The painting was owned in the early 20th century by the collector Captain E.G. Spencer-Churchill.
