Johannes Kuhnen was born and trained in Germany under Frederich Becker and Sigrid Delius. He emigrated to Australia in 1981 and since 1984 has taught in the School of Silversmithing at the Canberra School of Art (now part of the Australian National University). He has been primarily responsible for introducing vibrant colours into Australian metalworking.

Physical description | The body of sterling silver in the form of a truncated sphere, the front a bifurcated panel of anodised aluminium attached by four stainless steel pins to the body, the spout protruding through the centre, the body is stabilised by the front panel and a cylindrical foot at the rear, the handle of square section anodised aluminium which rises vertically at the rear of the body and curves inwards at the top. The lid, a flat sheet of silver hinged towards the front. |
