This medal by Marcelle Lancelot-Croce was made in 1916 and issued by the French Mint at a time when feelings were running high. In it the artist summons up the desolation wrought by war. On one side we see a wife who has lost her husband cradling a baby that has lost its father. Behind her stretches a devastated landscape scattered with more crosses. On the other side a wreath encircles the place where a lost loved one's name was to be engraved.

Bronze medal: L'Oeuvre des Barbares (The Work of the Barbarians) by Marcelle Renée Lancelot-Croce. Obverse: A woman carrying a baby wrapped in her cloak stands in a desolate battlefield. In the foreground stands a small , makeshift cross and wreath, with a French soldier's 'képi' (cap) hanging from the cross. There are trees and buildings on the distant horizon. Reverse: Foliage and laurel branch tied at bottom and the monogram RML (with the 'R' reversed) between the branches.
