Portrait of a man in black

Portrait Miniature
ca. 1590-1600 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This portrait of an unknown man is typical of Oliver’s mature style, so very different from that of Nicholas Hilliard, who taught him. Oliver used shadowing to create the deep-set eyes, a protruding nose and prominent cheekbones. This contrasts with Hilliard’s approach, which was much more schematic – a few lines hinting at distinguishing facial features.
