Cheap devotional paintings like this were produced in large quantities for visitors to the temple of the goddess Kali at Kalighat. They were painted on thin paper in watercolours, sometimes with using metallic paint for the jewellery, as in this example.
Few early Kalighat paintings have survived. This one, acquired in 1889, is among the first to have entered the V&A’s collections.(27/9/2013) |
