Place of origin

William Blake was both the author and the designer of There is No Natural Religion. His production of both the text and the image in relief etching gives the publication an unusual unity. Blake applied the text to the plate as a mirror image of the way it was to be printed, using a medium that resisted the corrosive effect of acid. Exactly how he did this remains a mystery.

As Blake's lettering would have to have been made in reverse on the plate, it is thought that he must have made his design on paper and transferred it face down on the plate while still wet. Printmaking Techniques Gallery, Henry Cole Wing(1956)
