A plain wooden table of this type is known as 'zhuo', meaning a table with legs at the corners. A contrasting type of table with set-in legs is known as ‘an’. Both categories of Chinese table had numerous uses and so cannot be classified by function. Plain rectangular tables were used for eating, as writing desks or set against a wall for the purpose of displaying flowers or ornaments.
