Dürer conveys the pattern in this print with white lines on a black background, an unusual technique for woodcuts of this date. This is a late printing from the original woodblock. We can see this from the fact that parts of the black edge around the design are missing. This is where pieces of wood must have broken away from the edge of the block under the pressure of repeated printings.
