Ugo da Carpi made this print from a monochrome wash drawing made especially for reproduction by chiaroscuro woodcut. Each of the three different shades is printed from a different block.

Although Ugo da Carpi died in 1520, it was still profitable for the publisher Andrea Andreani of Mantua to republish this print in 1604.
