Marks and inscriptions
Inscribed 'all in low relief, very delicate / The fleur de lis may be stronger than / the rest. The roses also a little / more marked in prominence'; with several details of construction, measurements and colours marked; 'arrangements of inscriptions; left side / The Holy which shall / be born of thee / shall be called the Son of God; Behold a Virgin shall / conceive and have a Son / and He shall be / called Emanuel; right side / He shall be great / and shall be called / the son of the / Most High; and He shall reign / in the House / of Jacob / for ever; Top / A star / shall arise / out of Jacob; and a sceptre / shall spring / out of Israel; Bottom / Among the Lillies [sic] / moveth in haste / the lilly [sic] of Israel; to make known to / others the word / whish [sic] is conceived within her'.
Object history
The inscriptions are set against a background of flowers, lilies and perhaps cyclamens. There are roses set within quatrefoils at each corner and the middle of each side. There is an outer border of fleur-de-lys and an inner one of stars.
