Marks and inscriptions
Inscribed in J.H. Powell's hand 'bright bright on dead gold'; 'rebate measure / 7.10 x 4.10'; 'Frame B'; 'all gilt'; 'marked in the / gilding preparation'; 'dead' (repeated); 'painted'; 'angels / holding / scroll / in relief'.
Object history
The frame has in the centre at the top a cardinal's hat over a shield which bears initials, possibly J.N. there are shaped quatrefoils at the corners containing Christian symbols, two small quatrefoils to the long sides, and at the base of the frame are angels to either side with an inscription between them. The patterns used to decorate the frame include one in a Jacobean style and are not typical of Pugin's work. It is suggested that this design is by J.H. Powell, and may date from the 1860s.
