Place of origin

Drawing in pencil, wash, gouache, gold paint, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design shows a highly ornate decorative scheme for a ceiling divided into six main fields of decoration, two wide and three deep. The two central fields depicted are the largest, each characterised by its own distinct pattern of foliated arabesques and stylised floral motifs. Of the remaining four fields, two are of one pattern and two of another. Both of these patterns feature diaper-work with geometric and floral motifs. Borders, and narrow rectangular areas which separate the main fields, abound with floral and fret designs. Wash is used to indicate the surrounding architectural structure of pillars and walls. Portions of paper edges missing. Tearing and creasing at edges. Some minor staining. Conservation mounting underneath paper.
