The Old Shepherd's Chief Mourner

Print
1869 (engraved)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) did much to popularise the British painters of his day by reproducing their work in affordable media. He began his career as a mezzotint-engraver and later turned to photography, becoming the leading specialist in the photographic reproduction of paintings in England. This engraving reproduces a painting by the popular Victorian animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), which is also in the V&A collection. Using several engraving techniques, Hollyer has created variations of tone and texture that correspond well to the original painting.
