Eve

Wood Engraving
1926 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Eric Gill (1882-1940) was a sculptor, engraver and typeface designer. Initially he was interested in wood engraving as a medium for experimenting with alphabet and letter design, but he soon realised the broader possibilities it presented for illustration. He engraved many illustrations of religious and erotic subjects, often fusing the two, as in this provocative image of Eve.
