This print uses a combination of etching and engraving. The glitter of the scene and the shimmer of the costumes come from sharp, clearly defined, engraved lines. The printmaker pushed these directly into the metal printing plate using a tool called a burin. The landscape is composed of the softer strokes that are characteristic of etching. Etching involves using a needle to draw through a soft acid-resistant coating on the plate, allowing for finer and more fluid lines. Immersion in acid then bites the lines into the metal itself. The image belongs to a French 18th-century genre of idyllic pastoral scenes.
