This is a silver filigree brooch. Filigree is a simple technique that takes advantage of the fact that silver and gold wire are easy to bend. Jewellery makers form plain, twisted or plaited wire into delicate designs which are sometimes fragile. This brooch has been damaged at the upper edge and at some point someone has tried to fix it by applying some silver solder.
The filigree technique was widely used in antiquity, has been popular in Europe for centuries and is still used in many parts of the world. It can therefore be difficult to date.
