Bellows

1890-1900 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Bellows are used to drive air into a fire in order to enliven or resuscitate it. This pair of bellows was made in Kashmir, which was then wholly within northern India. Kashmir has been renowned for its works made in wood and papier-mâché, which were richly painted and varnished with floral designs. Such articles were produced in large quantities specifically for the many tourists who visited Kashmir in order to enjoy its fabled beauty and temperate climate. Like many Kashmiri painted and varnished wares, it is unlikely that this pair of bellows was made for anything other than for show, as a display piece to hang near a fireplace.
