Object history | This could be related to Diego Velázquez's painting, "The Surrender of Breda or the Lances" painted in 1635. This painting was commissioned by King Philip IV of Spain for the newly constructed Royal Palace near Madrid. The painting depicts the surrender of Breda during the Eighty Year War. At that point, Spain was in control of the low Countries including the Netherlands. |
