Object history | Medallion portrait of British architect James Gibbs in 1736. Gibbs was one of Britain's most influential architects. Trained in Rome, he designed mainly churches, countryhouses and buildings at both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Some of his most well-known designs include the Senate House at the University of Cambridge (used for ceremonial purposes) and St. Martins-in-the-Field in central London. |
