Connoisseurs at a Print Sale

Etching
1828 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

In this small, early 19th century illustration George Cruikshank has captured the theatrical and social atmosphere of an auction sale.

A sale of prints is taking place. The auctioneer stands on a podium on the right. Below him, around a table, is an all-male crowd of bidders, variously caught up in the excitement. The auctioneer seems to be taking a bid from the standing man on the far left, who waves a roll of papers. Prints are pinned up on the back wall of the room and some of the bidders, with friends, are studying their auction catalogues.
