Place of origin

The Derby porcelain factory specialised in this type of finely painted cabinet cup in the 1790s. Such cabinet-pieces were mainly intended for display and were valued as small-scale works of art. They were rarely, if ever, used. The Derby pattern books indicate that James Banford was to paint the medallions on cups with this border pattern.
