Place of origin |
Enamelling was an expensive technique that was practised only by independent studios. But in the mid-18th century a cheaper substitute was discovered. Staffordshire salt-glazed stoneware could be given scratched decoration, which was then filled in with cobalt blue. It usually consisted of rather stiff floral decoration, with occasional names and dates. Here a long inscription celebrates Britain's victorious alliance with the King of Prussia against the French.
