Paolozzi (born 1924) is a significant British artist, whose major contribution has been as a printmaker and sculptor. This image is an early experiment with screenprint, a medium that became central to his work. He and other artists working in the 1960s used it as a primary artist's medium, raising its status to equal that of painting and sculpture. Both his sculpture and printmaking in the early 1950s frequently reflected the idea of man as machine.

Production Note

Paolozzi made an impression from a screen bearing this image in 1954 with the date as part of the print, but he subsequently reprinted it adding the pink wash in 1957, hence the two dates on this impression; a third version was produced in 1958 for which he soaked screen with turpentine, causing the image to blur.
