The potters of Staffordshire could not make red stoneware to rival the red teapots imported from Yixing in China. They did not develop the expertise until later. Instead, they mass-produced red earthenwares of their own design, ornamented with applied white sprigs.

Physical description

Teapot and cover of lead-glazed red earthenware with stamped white sprigged decoration and with silver fittings.
[Teapot] Teapot with a pear-shaped body, loop handle and faceted spout, and the reliefs on each side consist of a lion rampant underneath a crown, and above with two birds on sprays of foliage, and below the rim is a milled border.
[Cover] Convex cover with an acorn knob, and decorated with a crown and sprays of foliage, and fastened to the handle and the spout by a silver chain.
