Place of origin |
Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940) is one of the best-loved French artists of his era. He spent almost his entire life in Paris, and the last twelve years in an apartment overlooking the Square Vintimille, so he was an excellent choice by the publisher Jean Gabriel Darignes to make one of the 62 images commissioned to illustrate 31 essays by French writers. Although this etching was made well into the 20th century - in 1937 - the image has been likened to an Impressionist masterpiece.
