Staffordshire potters rediscovered red stoneware in the mid-18th century. They made no attempt to copy the original Chinese prototypes, but invented completely new forms. This fine lathe-turned pot is securely datable to 1761. It bears an applied sprig of the newly crowned king, George III (ruled 1760-1820), and his equally new queen.
