Place of origin

This impression is taken from a block in the V&A collection made by Percy Roberts (active 1866–83) to demonstrate the effects of various wood engraving tools. The numbered squares correspond to numbered tools also in the V&A collection. Roberts provided a detailed explanation as to the tools’ use. For example the tools numbered 4, 14 and 22 are: a tint tool for free work, foreground, buildings, a flat scorper for lowering areas needing to fade into light and flesh tints and a spitsticker used for drapery and texture like dotting.
