Brief description
Kimono, silk crêpe with embroidered and resist-dyed decoration of auspicious motifs, Japan, 1850-1880
Physical description
Outer kimono (uchikake) with long, 'swinging sleeves' indicating that it was worn by a young woman. Silk crepe with embroidery and resist-dyeing. The all-over design consists of billowing waves and rocks (confined to the lower section), pine, bamboo, plum blossoms, chrysanthemums and peonies. Cranes and long-tailed tortoises also appear. The garment was first resist-dyed, with stencils used to imitate tie-dyeing in places. Much of the design was then embroidered in silk and gold-wrapped silk threads. The garment is wadded and lined throughout with red silk.
