Place of origin

After about 1600 the making of Italian maiolica (tin-glazed earthenware) began to spread. At the same time it began to decline, sometimes to the level of a peasant craft. Strong 'folk art' images such as these soldiers with their exaggerated striped breeches carried on the old traditions. But the sophistication of the old work has been lost.
