This sampler comes from northern Germany. The needleworker has used black cotton on a linen ground. The patterns she has included are typical of the Vierlande area. They were used to decorate household linen and clothing. The V&A collection includes embroidered samplers with regional patterns, such as this one, as well as samplers that were made as school exercises.
