Lucien Métivet was a painter and illustrator, also contributing illustrations to humorous periodicals. He designed three posters for the singer Eugénie Buffet who sang at Les Ambassadeurs, La Cigale, and other key nightclubs of fin-de-siecle Paris. Shown naturalistically walking down a street at night, with her hands stuffed deep in her pockets to shield them from the cold, her songs were about everyday scenarios and working class life.
