Engraved in 1958, the lamp was exhibited at the Ecclesiastical Art Exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. The glass, a dome, was made possibly for the chemical engineering industry. The design for the engraving was inspired by arched decoration on a medieval ivory and the lettering is taken from the Latin of St John's Gospel, chapter I, verses 9 and 14. Translated these are: That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world and the world was made by Him... and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
