This figure of St Joseph was originally designed to hold a small figure of Jesus Christ as a child, which is missing. Sculpted and painted portraits of St Joseph as the father of the infant Christ was a popular subject in Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries. The elaborately coloured paintwork on this example is mostly original.
Salzillo (1707-1738) spent his entire working life in Murcia, sculpting devotional images and processional groups (pasos).

He is clothed in a tunic, blue and gold, patterned in a typical early eighteenth century style; a cloak, reddish brown and gold, is caught over the right arm. |
