This figure of St Joseph was originally designed to hold a small figure of Jesus Christ as a child, which is missing. Sculpted and painted portraits of St Joseph as the father of the infant Christ was a popular subject in Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries. The elaborately coloured paintwork on this example is mostly original.
Salzillo (1707-1738) spent his entire working life in Murcia, sculpting devotional images and processional groups (pasos).

Physical description
Painted and gilt walnut statue of St. Joseph with eyelashes and glass eyes on pine base. St. Joseph standing, long-haired and bearded, with hands held as though carrying a child. He is clothed in a tunic, blue and gold, patterned in a typical early eighteenth century style; a cloak, reddish brown and gold, is caught over the right arm.
