The term lithography, which refers to a particular printing process, comes from the Greek and means literally 'drawing on stone'. To make a colour lithograph a separate stone is required for each colour. To produce this print Toulouse-Lautrec worked on the stones with pens and brushes. He also used a spatter technique that he invented in order to create areas of broken tone. The results he was able to produce in his prints have led to him being acclaimed as the foremost exponent of colour lithography.
