This is the lower left portion of a panel depicting the Tree of Jesse. Jesse is shown wearing a gown and cloak, seated with his feet to the right, his knees drawn up and his body turned towards the spectator. The Stem of Jesse issues from his chest.

The Tree of Jesse refers to a passage in the Biblical Book of Isiah which describes the descent of the Messiah from Jesse of Bethlehem, through his son David.

Physical description
This fragment, the lower part of a panel, shows Jesse wearing a gown and cloak, seated with his feet to the right, his knees drawn up, while his body is turned towards the spectator. The Stem of Jesse issues from his chest. To his left stands a saint or prophet, encircled by a branch of the Tree of Jesse. He wears a gown and a robe draped from the left shoulder and carries a closed book with a prominent clasp in his left hand and an unidentifiable emblem in his right.

The whole of the top of the panel is missing. Green paint and the usual daisy pattern remain on the ground. Jesse's garment is lined with red and edged with gold, as is the garment of the standing figure. Jesse's shoes are red. The tree is gilded. The back of the panel at the bottom has been cut away. There is one lead plug in the fragment with a latten wire attached.

Discovered built into a wall in a church near Hadleigh, Suffolk. Formerly in the Corder Collection, Ipswich. In the possession of P. Nelson from whom it was acquired by Dr W.L. Hildburgh. On loan from him since 1926. Given by Dr Hildburgh in 1946.
