Bottle

1590-1630 (made)
Place of origin

The Karatsu kilns were the most important of numerous kiln groups established by Korean potters in western Japan during the late 16th century and the early 17th. The variety to which this particular bottle belongs, distinguished by a combination of white and brown glazes, is known as Chosen-garatsu or 'Korean Karatsu' ware. The bottle has the looseness and spontaneity of form and the subtlety of texture and colour that Japanese connoisseurs have always admired in Korean ceramics.
