The form of this lacquered wooden casket is European. The elaborate brass fittings are in the style of Spanish or Portuguese furniture. It is an example of 'Bantam' work, a technique of engraving multi-coloured lacquer. Bantam was the name of the port in Indonesia through which many East Asian goods were shipped to Europe. It also became, by association, the name that was used for this technique in England in the 17th and 18th centuries.

This lacquered wooden casket is of European form, with elaborate brass fittings in a manner of Spanish or Portuguese furniture. The engraved multi-coloured lacquer technique was known as 'Bantam work' in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, 'Bantam' being the name of the port in Indonesia through which many East Asian goods were shipped to Europe.
