The probable sculptor of this relief, Pedro de la Cuadra, was active in Valladolid in the province of Castile in the first decades of the 17th century. King David's thick curly hair and heavy, swirling drapery recall other Castilian sculptors of the period, such as Gregorio Fernández (1576-1636). The relief probably formed part of an altarpiece.
