Brief description | Alabaster panel (fragment) depicting the Circumcision. English, 15th century. |
Physical description | The fragment is the lower left of a panel and shows the Virgin Mary, crowned and veiled and wearing a gown and a cloak, looking down at the Christ Child, whom she holds on an altar covered by a cloth. He faces the spectator, touching the Virgin with his right hand. The Jewish priest performs the circumcision with a knife in his right hand; in his left he holds a block. The bearded St. Joseph stands behind the Virgin on the left of the panel, wearing a belted gown, hood and cloak and holding a staff in his right hand. His eyelids and pupils and those of the Virgin are carved. Behind him to the right are two hands held together in prayer. Behind the Christ Child is a figure, now headless, holding a dish. The figure of the Jewish priest doubtless would have been on the right-hand side in the complete panel. The top and right side of the panel are missing, as well as the figure of the priest, and the head of the Child is damaged. Incised marks and letters on the lower part of the altar and the base are probably of later date. Traces of green paint and the usual daisy pattern remain on the ground. Slight traces of gilding remain on the Virgin's crown. The back of the panel has been cut away, especially at the bottom. There are two holes, one filled with lead. |
