Gallery label | Bassingthwaighte etched the plate in stages to create the layered central structure resembling steel girders bolted together. He did this by applying stopping-out varnish to protect parts of the design from the acid as it etched further. For the wasteland behind, he allowed the acid to freely etch the surface. He then applied colours to the entire plate, not just the surface, before printing.(August 2019) |
