Object history
The scene depicted is one of three intermezzi of the Veglia (Night vigil) of La Liberazione di Tirenno, e d'Arnea a theatrical spectacle by Andrea Salvadori, with ballets and tournaments directed by Agniolo Ricci, music by Marco da Gagliano and scenery and costumes by Giulio Parigi, performed in the theatre in the Uffizi Palace, Florence, on the occasion of the marriage of Ferdinando Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua with Caterina de Medici, a sister of the Grand Duke of Cosimo II, 6 February 1617 (new style dating).

A drawing exists of this print, the attribution of which is a subject of debate (see references Washington, 1975 catalogue and 1992 Nancy exhibition catalogue)

The print is dated 1616 in the old style dating.

Salvadori's spectacle was not published in print form until 1668.
