Object history
The coffee table is now in the possession of the City Art Gallery, Bristol, A photograph of it is reproduced as Pl.18 in the Small Picture Book Victorian and Edwardian Decorative Arts, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1952.
Historical context
The coffee table illustrated in this sketchbook was made by William Watt, 1874; the costume studies were probably used for John Coleman's production of Shakespeare's 'Henry V', first performed at the Queen's Theatre, London 16 September 1876; the Spanish embroideries and Russian lamp, which are also illustrated in the sketchbook, are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
