Physical description

Sketchbook containing a design for a fireplace for S. Bethell, a sketch of a building inscribed 'after Sadler's Wells' and one of the interior of the (?) Haymarket Theatre; portrait sketches, some made at the Adelphi Theatre; plans of buildings, including Greek and Assyrian palaces; studies of 18th century costume from prints in the British Museum, and two costume sketches connected with the 1876 production of the Merchant of Venice. 76 pages (others missing) of metallic surfaced paper, thread-stitched in paper boards. 1879-80.

Inscribed throughout with notes, including comments on Shakespearian productions, a criticism of the competition entries for the Railway Hotel, Preston, financial notes for a proposed club, names and addresses etc.

Object history note

Some of the costume sketches were possibly also used in Mrs. Bateman's production of Othello in 1880.
