This is a fragment of a panel representing the Annunciation. The bare-headed Virgin, wearing a gown and cloak draped from her right shoulder, kneels on a tasselled cushion at a desk supported by a cranked column. Her eyes have been carved and drilled and an inscription is incised on the book. The back of the panel has been cut away at the bottom to assist handling.

Physical description | This fragment is the lower right-hand portion of an Annunciation panel. The bare-headed Virgin, wearing a gown and a cloak draped from her right shoulder, kneels on a tasselled cushion at a desk supported by a cranked column. An open book has the inscription 'VIR ET/GO FI/PA L/RI' incised on it. She turns at the waist, hands raised to face the archangel Gabriel (missing). The Virgin's eyes have been carved, with the pupils drilled. Blue paint remains on the Virgin's cloak, and flesh-coloured paint on her face. There are traces of brown on her hair. There are two holes in the back of the fragment, one of which is plugged with lead. The bottom has been cut away. |
